Obituary

Devoted husband to Patricia (Long) for 52 years. Father to John III (Julie), Mary Beth LoVerdi (Tony), Megan Leadbetter (Scott), and Michael (Jennifer). Loving grandfather to Tony, Jack, Charlie, Will, Lucas, Ryann, Tate, Olivia, Spencer, Shea, Addison, Johnny, Claire, and Matt. Loving son to (deceased) Jack and Mary Lucas. Brother to Lynn Martin (Rob), Jerome Lucas (Ginger), and Lawrence Lucas (Libby). John was the oldest of 55 Lucas and Dowdle cousins.

John committed his life to family, community and service. A proud alum of Loyola Academy ‘63, Marquette University ‘67 and Loyola University ‘04. He was in constant pursuit of insight and knowledge. John’s commitment to community began when he served in the Marine Corps and the Army. It continued into married life where he and Pat were dedicated members of St. Philip the Apostle parish in Northfield. It was there they met life long friends. With his entrepreneurial spirit, John founded the Lucas Company in 1975 along with his dad and brother.

His business leadership continued at Holmes Engraving. In 2000, he moved to a life of service. In 2004, he was ordained a Deacon in the Catholic Church where he served in many capacities. He was a counselor to countless people at the Samaritan Institute and various parishes. John was proud to preside over weddings, baptisms and funerals of many friends and relatives. His life of service continued as executive director for Amate House and Mary and Joseph Retreat House.

John will be fondly remembered as a “man for others” who served those with compassion, care and concern. He was a giant of a man and a shining example of Christian virtue. His spirit and passion will live forever.
